Oil & Gas Terms in Category L

Light crude oil

Light crude oil is liquid petroleum that has a low density and flows freely at room temperature.

it has a low viscosity, low specific gravity and high api gravity due to the presence of a high proportion of light hydrocarbon fractions.

it generally has a low wax content.

Light crude oil receives a higher price than heavy crude oil on commodity markets because it produces a higher percentage of gasoline and diesel fuel when converted into products by an oil refinery.

Loading arm

See marine loading arm.

Lithostatic pressure

Overburden pressure of rocks at a depth.

Logging while drilling

A technique using a suite of logs that are part of the drilling bha.

The formation properties are measured while drilling (although 40 to 60 feet back from the bit) and the information is pulsed to the surface.

Lngc

Abbr.

Liquefied natural gas carrier, which is a sea vessel used to transport liquefied petroleum gas (lpg).

Lld

Abbr.

Deep laterlog / liquid level detection / log linear detrending

Lyophilic

Having an affinity for the suspending medium, such as bentonite in water.

Lower kelly valve

An essentially full-opening valve installed immediately below the kelly, with outside diameter equal to the tool joint outside diameter.

Low-solids mud

A drilling mud that contains a minimum amount of solid material (sand, silt, and so on) and that is used in rotary drilling when possible because it can provide fast drilling rates.

Low-solids fluid

See low-solids mud

Lyohilic colloid

A colloid that is not easily precipitated from a solution and is readily dispersible after the precipitation by an addition of the solvent.

Low-yield clay

Commercial clay chiefly of the calcium montmorillonite type and having a yield of approximately 15 barrels per ton.

Lost circulation additives

Materials added to the mud in varying amounts to control or prevent lost circulation.

Classified as fiber, flake, or granular.

Lubricator stack

A surface device used in slickline operations to keep the line lubricated and provide grease for pressure control.

Lower kelly valve

An essentially full-opening valve installed immediately below the kelly, with outside diameter equal to the tool joint outside diameter.
