Whipstock:

A long steel casing that uses an inclined plane to cause the bit to deflect from the original borehole at a slight angle.

Whipstocks are sometimes used in controlled directional drilling, in straightening crooked boreholes, and in sidetracking to avoid unretrieved fish.
