mud balance
A beam balance consisting of a cup and a graduated arm carrying a sliding weight and resting on a fulcrum. It is used to determine the density or weight of drilling mud.

trip margin
The small amount of additional mud weight carried over that needed to balance formation pressure to overcome the pressure-reduction effects caused by swabbing when a trip out of the hole is made.
hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB)
An expressions of the relative attraction of an emulsifier for water and oil, determined largely by the chemical composition and ionization characteristics of a given emulsifier. The HLB of an emulsifier is not directly related to solubilit5y, but it determines the type of emulsion that tends to be formed. It is an indication of the behavioral characteristics and not an indication of emulsifier efficiency.
